Every ten years, a smoke detector chirps at 3 a.m. — the low-battery warning, or the end-of-life warning, or something in between — and its owner takes it down, replaces the battery, and puts the old unit on top of the refrigerator, where it stays until they move.

The reason it stays there is that the disposal path is genuinely unclear. Your municipal recycling center will refuse it. Your regular trash pickup is technically allowed to take it in many jurisdictions, but people feel weird about that, and a growing number of city rules discourage it. Your HHW event has a mixed record. So it sits on the fridge.

Here's what's actually going on inside the plastic housing, and what the real disposal path looks like.

The two kinds of smoke detector

Almost every residential smoke detector sold in the U.S. is one of two types: ionization or photoelectric. Some newer models are dual-sensor and contain both.

Ionization detectors contain a very small amount (about 0.9 microcuries, or 33 kBq) of americium-241, a radioactive isotope that produces alpha particles. Those particles ionize the air inside a small sensing chamber; smoke particles disrupt the ionization and trigger the alarm. This design is good at detecting fast, flaming fires — think grease fires.

Photoelectric detectors use a light source and a sensor arranged so that smoke particles scatter the light beam into the sensor, triggering the alarm. This design is better at detecting slow, smoldering fires — think a couch that's been ignited by a cigarette. Photoelectric detectors contain no radioactive material.

The distinction matters for disposal because ionization detectors, despite the microscopic amount of radioactive material, are considered a controlled category by the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission). Photoelectric detectors are ordinary electronic waste.

How to tell which you have

Check the label on the back of the unit. It will say either "Ionization" (often with a little radiation trefoil and a note about Am-241) or "Photoelectric." Some units say both. If the label is worn off and you can't tell, treat it as ionization for disposal purposes.

Why the amount is "safe" but the disposal is still regulated

The americium in a household smoke detector is present in a tiny, sealed foil, and under normal use it produces less external radiation than the potassium in a banana. You are not at risk from having one on the ceiling. You are not at risk from having one in a drawer. You would not be at risk from breaking one open, although you should not, because the containment foil is what makes the unit safe.

The reason it's still regulated for disposal is aggregation. One detector is trivial. A landfill's worth of detectors, in principle, is not — and the licensing agreement under which the detectors are sold requires the manufacturer to provide a takeback path. That's the mechanism that actually works.

The manufacturer mail-back path (this is the real answer)

Every major U.S. manufacturer of ionization smoke detectors — First Alert, Kidde, Universal Security Instruments, BRK — operates a mail-back program specifically because of that NRC license. You put the detector in a padded envelope, address it to the manufacturer's takeback address, and mail it. The typical cost is postage; some manufacturers cover it, some don't.

The addresses change occasionally, but the current landing pages are easy to find by searching "[manufacturer name] smoke detector recycling." You will need to include the model number and quantity, and some manufacturers ask you to remove the battery first.

Do this the same day you take the detector down. If you put it on top of the fridge, we know from experience that it will still be there in 2032.

What about photoelectric detectors and CO alarms?

Photoelectric detectors are electronic waste. They go in the same stream as an old blender or a broken clock radio. Municipal e-waste drop-offs will take them, most Best Buys will take them, and Staples has an in-store program for small electronics.

Carbon monoxide alarms are also electronic waste. Standalone CO alarms, no radioactive material — they're just an electrochemical sensor, a small circuit, and a speaker. They go in e-waste.

Combination smoke/CO alarms with an ionization smoke sensor are treated as ionization detectors for disposal purposes. If it has americium in it, that's the path.

Hardwired detectors — the extra step

If you're replacing hardwired detectors — the interconnected units that homebuilders install starting in the 1990s and 2000s — remember that you need to disconnect them from the circuit and cap the wires safely before disposal. The unit itself follows the same rules as any other detector of its type; it's the wiring that's the additional step.

If you're doing a whole-house replacement — say, replacing eight ten-year-old units at once — the manufacturer mail-back path still works, but you may want to consolidate into a single mailer. Most manufacturers accept a single package of multiple detectors, provided you list them all on the return form.

"The system works. The problem is that nobody knows the system exists, so we get calls asking whether they can throw one in the trash, and the answer is 'in most jurisdictions, technically yes, but here's a better path that takes about ten minutes.'"

Commercial systems — a different world

Commercial fire alarm systems are a completely different category. Beam detectors, aspirating smoke detectors, industrial heat detectors, and panel-connected systems in commercial buildings are typically removed by the fire alarm contractor during a system upgrade, and the contractor is responsible for the disposal path. In many cases, the components are refurbished and resold; in others, they go through a licensed hauler.

If you own a small commercial property in South Florida and you've just had your system replaced, the contractor should be handling the old panel and detectors. If they've left them in a pile for you to deal with, that's a conversation to have. For anything beyond a household level of quantity, the disposal path runs through a licensed hauler — for example, the sort of commercial service American Waste Haulers' Miami-area team and similar regional operators provide for small businesses. It is not a "put it on the curb" situation, and treating it that way is how you end up with a citation from the county.

The short version

For a single household ionization detector: envelope, manufacturer, postage. Ten minutes. Do it the day you take it down.

For photoelectric or CO: e-waste drop-off. Municipal or big-box retailer.

For a commercial system: contractor handles it, or a licensed hauler does. Not the trash.

For the one that's been on top of your refrigerator since 2019: still ten minutes. Still an envelope.
